  • Overview

    Our Director of Security reports directly to the Facility Administrator with corporate oversight provided by the Correct Care Vice President of Security Operations. The Director of Security is responsible for the provision of an orderly, safe and secure environment for the staff; the resident/detainee population and the general public. This position creates, implements and maintains comprehensive guidelines and protocols for the operation of the security department. This position functions as a member of the senior management team interfacing with and providing support for the medical and clinical mission of the facility. The Director of Security plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security department staff and is responsible for the security, custody and control of the residents/detainees in the facility. The Director of Security assumes primary responsibility for the security of all of the facility buildings and property.

    Qualifications

    Education:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice, Business, or related field with ten (10) years experience in correctional, security, or related work.
    • Education and progressive work experience may be substituted for a bachelor degree at management's discretion.

    Experience:

    • Five (5) years experience in a supervisory capacity.
    • Ability to handle a variety of tasks that are routine in nature, while keeping work flowing in an orderly manner.
    • Must have the ability to pass a background check and drug screen.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license.
    • Any violations or status change must be reported immediately to human resources and supervisor.
    • Must be able to pass and maintain clearance for a Public Trust Position if working with specific patients.
    • Ability to express thoughts logically, in English, in both written and verbal form.
    • Ability to use computers and the typical software such as Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and various database systems.

    Licenses/Certifications:

    • None required.

    Responsibilities

    1. Utilizes a participative Management by Walking Around proactive approach to the oversight of the security department personnel and the provision of secure custody and control practices in a therapeutic setting.
    2. Participates as a member of the Senior Management Team at the facility.
    3. Oversees or carries out investigations of any incidents or alleged incidents of impropriety or possible criminal nature on the part of residents/detainees, staff or visitors as assigned by the Facility Administrator (or designee) or the Correct Care Vice President of Operations.
    4. Manages security related budgetary items (e.g. direct labor costs; uniforms; supplies and equipment).
    5. Creates and maintain an environment within the facility and its compound that ensures the security and personal safety of the staff, resident/detainee population and the general public.
    6. Creates, implements and maintains a comprehensive set of security related policies and procedures and post orders to regulate the security measures that are in effect throughout the facility, its secure compound, during off-site transports and off-site security post assignments.
    7. Reviews policies and procedures and post orders on an annual basis to ensure their continued effectiveness.
    8. Creates implements and monitors day-to-day security protocols to ensure the smooth, effective and responsive operation of the security department.
    9. Conducts on-the-job training of assigned personnel to include briefings concerning relevant facility policies and procedures.
    10. Exercises direct supervision of the Shift Manager, Captains and Sergeants to ensure that the Security Department work force meets its secure custody and control responsibilities.
    11. Provides supervision of assigned personnel and becomes thoroughly knowledgeable of related post orders and facility policies and procedures.
    12. Oversees the instruction and training of security department staff and makes inspections to ensure they properly perform all assigned duties and post orders.
    13. Evaluates the performance of assigned personnel; submits written performance appraisals, counsels, and disciplines assigned personnel in accordance with facility policy.
    14. Maintains an open line of communication with all assigned officers.
    15. Works with the Facility Administrator and the management team to create and maintain security related rules, regulations and protocols for the resident/detainee population.
    16. Monitors and manage the resident/detainee populations adherence to the security related rules, regulations and protocols of the facility.
    17. Create and manage security related emergency responses to ensure the continued secure custody and control of the resident/detainee population throughout a wide range of emergency situations.
    18. Create and manage protocols for the safe and secure transportation of residents/detainees to off-site locations.
    19. Provide for and coordinate the provision of custody and control of residents/detainees during outside trips and off-site remote duty posts (e.g. court appearances, hospital convalescence, evaluations, etc).
    20. Reviews security related discrepancies, malfunctions, safety hazards, and security breeches throughout the facility, its secure compound, equipment and systems and ensures corrective action is taken on a timely basis.
    21. Maintains control of all facility keys and security equipment within the facility.
    22. Provides support and assistance to the medical staff in their efforts to provide for the healthcare of the resident/detainee population.
    23. Provides Support and assistance to the Clinical staff in their efforts to provide for the treatment of the resident/detainee population.
    24. Maintains compliance with all governing bodies, including but not limited to: the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), American Correctional Association (ACA), The Joint Commission (TJC), etc. as they relate to the security departments policies and procedures.
    25. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
    26. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
    27. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
    28. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
    29. Perform other duties as assigned.
