  • Overview

    Our Activity Director works to provide all residents pleasant and rewarding activities in a safe and comfortable environment. This position plans and implements passive and active activities to treat or maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the resident population.

    Qualifications

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree with major courses in physical education or a related field.

    Experience:

    • Five (5) years’ experience planning and implementing activities to treat or maintain the physical, mental, or emotional well-being of clients. 
    • Three (3) years’ experience in a secure correctional, mental health or forensic setting. 
    • Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels within the facility. 
    • Good writing skills and must be able to thoroughly and effectively document all work performed in the position. 
    • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department. 
    • High degree of empathetic listening, tact and kindness toward others. 
    • Ability to communicate well verbally.

    Licenses/Certifications:

    • None required.

    Responsibilities

    1. Provide recreation resources and opportunities in order to improve health and wellbeing of the resident population.
    2. Designs, implements and evaluates activity programs and schedules to structure free time for residents with an emphasis on evenings and weekends.
    3. Confers with administrative and medical staff on activities and goals.
    4. Provides evaluation of residents by observation and interviews.
    5. Prepare progress and treatment reports.
    6. Identify activity needs and participate in in-service training.
    7. Lead group sessions to teach alternative coping skills to assist the resident population to overcome any environmental, physical, or emotional barriers.
    8. Works effectively with all residents, medical, nursing, and other staff members and to deal tactfully with the public.
    9. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
    10. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
    11. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
    12. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
    13. Perform other duties as assigned.
